Project description
Search for sources for historical demographic research:
There is not yet an overview of sources for quantitative research in historical demography, which is a prerequisite for representative research results. The search will include central, regional and local archives.
Possible sources are
- government sources: Census manuscripts, tax lists, population registers, civil registers
- religious sources: birth, marriage, death registers, population registers (status animarum)
Transcription of such sources:
The decision on which sources to transcribe will be based on the sources available. The two most important types of sources are sources on population status (censuses etc.) and sources on population changes (birth, marriage and death registers). Census manuscripts and similar sources are preferred because there is already a lot of such comparative data from other countries in Southeast Europe. Other sources will be transcribed if not enough census manuscripts are found. The transcription will be based on existing recording models.
Comparative studies:
The aim of the project is the comparative study of population characteristics and trends. Comparative data will come from the Mosaic project, which has already collected enough data from countries in the region (Serbia, Albania, Romania).
